These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to purchase john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level names remained operational.
